About

Piers Grizzelle (born 1952) took up painting in his late forties. 2000-2004 he attended painting classes at Richmond Adult College, Surrey, also taking weekly Life Drawing. Traditional training continued at the studio of Jason Bowyer PPNEAC (d. 2019), which he attended for several years. He was also regularly taught by NEAC members Karn Holly (d.2014) and Arthur Neal.

“Anything might start a painting off. Where it will lead, maybe nowhere, will be discovered.

For me paintings are equally object as much as image. Space will exist but not necessarily behind a picture plane. Physical properties of the painting in a room are more important to me than properties that lend the painting to be an illusion of something else.

Painting does not reveal truths supposed to exist beyond the edge or behind the surface of the canvas. The only truth revealed is that of the painter’s relationship to the medium.

Paintings ask questions, invite debate. Delivering solutions is not the painter’s role.”
